In this lesser known cinematic gem by director Billy Wilder, who gave the world such films as Some Like It Hot and Avanti!, Jack Lemmon – one of the greatest comic actors of all time – portrays the friendly, accommodating office clerk C. C. Baxter. He enjoys popularity among his superiors at the insurance company where he works because he lets them use his bachelor pad for their regular affairs – in return for which they promise the good-natured Baxter the chance for a promotion. But this immoral scheme falls apart when the charming elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine) enters the solitary man’s life. You couldn’t wish for a better pre-Christmas film than this irresistibly charming romance and subtly satirical comedy all rolled in one.
