Singin’ in the Rain was a hit upon its release in the 1950s, but it wasn’t called one of the best classic film musicals of all time until later. Over the intervening years, the outstanding dancing of Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds has lost none of its glamour. The film nevertheless has attained cult status mainly as a charming romantic comedy and a dark satire of 1920s Hollywood, when the stars of the silent era were faced with the sudden emergence of “talkies.” This year, the film celebrated the seventieth anniversary of its creation with a brand new digitally restored version.
